Frequently Asked Questions

Q: So why should my child have a HomeSchool ID card?
A:
Every homeschooled student has different needs and schedules for his or her education that do not necessarily match up with traditional school hours. Often a homeschooler may be in thecommunity during public school hours for field trips, park days, support group meetings, attendanceat group classes, etc.

Additionally, High School age students MUST present a photo ID in order to sit for the SAT exams.Air travel restrictions mandate a photo ID. And many movie and retail student discount programs require a student photo ID card.

Q: Are the HomeSchool ID cards laminated?
A:
Absolutely not! Our goal has been to make sure the IDs do not look homemade. We use a durable PVC card that's just like credit cards and most states' driver's licenses.

Q: My child already has a Drivers License or State-Issued ID Card. Isn’t that sufficient?
A:
No. These are excellent forms of identification, but do not differentiate between a public school student that may be skipping school and a homeschooler on an educational errand or outing during traditional school hours.

Q: My family has a Support Group or Umbrella School membership card. Isn’t that sufficient?
A
. Again, and sadly, no. Membership cards are simply that, membership cards. They are generally issued to the family, not individuals; and have no photo on them for identification.

Q: I never let the children go anywhere without me.
A:
That’s too bad. Current truancy statutes generally intimidate homeschool families and children into staying at home, behind closed doors. One of the advantages to homeschooling is that we are able to teach our children to be independent, both in thoughts and actions. As our children get older, they need the freedom to go to the playground, a neighbor’s house, the corner convenience store, a part-time job or volunteer activities.

Q: Are ID cards required for my children?
A:
In a word, NO. At the present time there are no requirements in any state for homeschoolers tocarry an ID card.

Q: My children are still very young. Do they need an ID card?
A:
. Again, there is no requirement for any child to have an ID card, but it is still a good idea for any child to have a photo ID card, especially if your family travels at all. State laws vary as to when a child can get a state issued ID, but generally states will not issue a photo ID to children under the age of 12.

Q: My child is Dual enrolled at our community college. Isn’t his college ID card adequate?
A:
Depending on the compulsory school age in your area, your child may still fall under local truancy statutes. Dual enrollment status typically does not exempt students from public school attendance regulations.
